Unlike Gilligan’s two hour tour, this Goleta bike ride will take you from hills to surf and back home in a loop in two hours. Choose any beautiful Sunday morning and enjoy the scenic beauty of Goleta with all it has to offer including  peek at Campus life.  If you are looking for an easy, low traffic, scenic bike ride, here’s one that I recently enjoyed with a couple of friends. It’s about a 15 mile round trip, it’s mostly flat and it offers views of the mountains, Sandpiper golf course, UCSB, the Ritz-Carlton Bacara Hotel and Goleta Beach.

The Bike Loop

I started at Lassen Park, which is on the west side of Lassen Street, north of
Hollister. Head north (towards the mountains) on the bike path that runs along the
edge of the park, go under the freeway and cross the bridge to your left. Stay to the
left after you cross the bridge and you will enjoy a short, tree-shaded stretch of
path that makes the bike ride delightful and ends you on Ribera Drive.

Continue north on Ribera to its intersection with Cathedral Oaks, which is adjacent to Foothill

Goleta Bike Ride

Elementary School. Turn left on Cathedral Oaks and head west. Cathedral Oaks has a wide shoulder all
the way to its intersection with the 101, which is a little way past Winchester Canyon.

The Foothills

Continue west on Cathedral Oaks, cross the 101 and turn right on Hollister at the Sandpiper Golf Course. Either turn left there at Hollister to start your return route, or better yet, I recommend that you turn right and head into the Ritz-Carlton Bacara. It’s a just over a mile round trip to the hotel’s motor court and back, but if you’re interested in seeing some exotic automobiles, it makes a perfect turn around.

Head East on Hollister(South as the freeway runs) and you’ll find a spacious and well marked bike path to Los Carneros. Turn right on Los Carneros and then take a left on Mesa Rd. Pretty soon you’ll pick up a bike path that skirts UCSB and takes you to Goleta Beach. (Or take a break at the
Beachside Bar-Café for a bite and a coffee or a Bloody Mary). From Goleta Beach Park, follow
the signs to the Obern bike path. Follow that and turn left as you cross over
the bridge to ride underneath Hollister and north back to Lassen Park, completing your
loop.

Extra Credit

If you want to add some climbing to your excursion and you have an extra 30 minutes, check this two miles uphill into some beautiful terrain. At Cathedral Oaks and Glen Annie, turn on to Glen
Annie. You will pass the Golf Course and wind a bit over two miles into
the foothills, past orchards, and eventually dead end at a private ranch. Now for
your reward: a nice downhill all the way back to Cathedral Oaks.
